Katy Perry and John Mayer allegedly broke up last week after dating since last Summer and briefly splitting last August. However, sources have now said that the pair were "fighting pre-split," hinting that the breakup was for the best.
Three days after Us Weekly broke the news that the showbiz couple had decided to call it a day, 'California Girl' Katy shared a sad love song with her millions of Twitter followers.
"Perfectly put, by Tristan Prettyman," Perry wrote, sharing Prettyman's piano-driven breakup ballad "I Was Gonna Marry You."
However, according to multiple sources close to the couple, the split seemed inevitable. On top of many work commitments, Perry's third studio album, Mayer's upcoming tour dates, the on-and-off couple have been "fighting" recently, one source close to the rocker says.
"Introducing her to his dad was a big deal," the Mayer source says.
"It was just too much, too soon," another insider adds.

However, some are cautioning that the pair could rekindle their romance.
"They've broken up before so it's hard to tell," a pal points out. "She's changed a lot since she's been with him . . . [you] can't argue that she has been in love."
“It’s sad,” another source told the publication, giving hope of a reconciliation they added: “It’s not over until it’s over. You have to see how things play out.”
But, some see the pair as 'on a break' rather than officially over.
“It's more of a break than a break-up,” an insider told HollywoodLife, adding: “You’ll probably see them hanging out sooner then later and hooking up again. They remain very friendly.”
